I shouldn’t need to mention it, but keep a copy of the original footage somewhere, preferably on an external hard drive or somewhere separate. Mistakes happen. It’s easier to redo an edit that have to redo the whole shoot.

When editing the footage, bear in mind the overall goal of the piece and the intended audience. Don’t be tempted to overdo the special effects, transitions or be too fancy. To begin with, keep it simple, you can always add embellishments later if you need to. It’s easier to add effects than take them away, so reign in your enthusiasm and be conservative to begin with.

The technical aspects of editing involve making the piece title safe, i.e. to make sure it fits within the screen. It can be re-edited for 4:3 or 10:9 after the initial edit is complete. The audio levels also have to be controlled from here. There needs to be a constant level otherwise the audience will pick it up and probably turn off. Titles and credits need to be added too, like the name and title of a speaker in a formal piece, the classic “Two years later” caption in a movie or other text element that needs to feature.

The cut is the most used editing tool there is. It involves cutting from one shot or scene directly to another. Any budding editor needs to get this right before moving on to anything else. The fade is probably the second most popular tool, where one shot fades into another a little slower than a cut.

Insert editing is another technique that an editor needs to know to make interesting videos. It’s where a master audio track is run but visual scenes are cut in as it’s happening. For example, the wedding vows, the audio of the couple taking the vows runs in the background while clips of the family and friends are cut in to see reactions. The scene remains cohesive because of the audio track, but different points of view are explored alongside it.

Editing can also mean dubbing in sound. Often the sound acquired at the shoot isn’t used because of interference, or the difficulty of placing microphones so a technique called “Foley” is used where the sound is dubbed in post production to complete the soundtrack.

KHARTOUM, Sudan – A 16-year-old south Sudanese girl was lashed 50 times after a judge ruled her knee-length skirt was indecent, her lawyer and family said in the latest case to push Sudan’s Islamic law into the spotlight.

The mother of teenager Silva Kashif told Reuters on Friday she was planning to sue the police who made the arrest and the judge who imposed the sentence, as her daughter was underage and a Christian.

The case will add fuel to a debate already raging over Sudan’s decency laws after this year’s high-profile conviction of Sudanese U.N. official Lubna Hussein, who was briefly jailed for wearing trousers in public.

Hussein, a former journalist who used her case to campaign against Sudan’s public order and decency regulations, is touring France to publicize her book about the prosecution. She had faced the maximum penalty of 40 lashes but was given a lighter sentence.

‘We all sat and cried’
Kashif, whose family comes from the south Sudanese town of Yambio, was arrested while walking to the market near her home in the Khartoum suburb of Kalatla last week, her mother Jenty Doro told Reuters.

“She is just a young girl but the policeman pulled her along in the market like she was a criminal. It was wrong,” said Doro.

Doro said Khashif was taken to Kalatla court where she was convicted and punished by a female police officer in front of the judge.

“I only heard about it after she was lashed. Later we all sat and cried … People have different religions and that should be taken into account,” she said.

Police want to speak to this man who was filmed on CCTV in Finsbury Park 30 minutes before the attack

A heavily pregnant woman was raped at gunpoint in her bedroom by a gang of armed burglars who broke into her home.

The 33-year-old victim, who was seven months’ pregnant, was watching TV with her boyfriend when the balaclava-clad men forced their way into their North London home.

Her 39-year-old boyfriend was threatened and hit around the head with the butt of a sawn-off shotgun as they demanded the keys to their Audi TT which was parked outside.

The woman was then grabbed and forced upstairs by one of the attackers and forced to perform a sex act on him which police have described as ‘oral rape’.

He threatened to shoot the couple unless she did what he said.

Speaking for the first time about the rape, the victim said: ‘I just wanted to protect my baby. I was absolutely terrified and being so late in the pregnancy I didn’t want to get into a fight where they might hurt me or my baby.

‘He (the rapist) said it was my lucky day.’

Her boyfriend added: ‘I pleaded, I was shouting, “She’s pregnant, she’s pregnant, leave off her, tell me what you want”.’

The men took the couple’s grey Audi TT and other items including an iPod, cash, debit cards and a laptop from their Finsbury Park home on May 14 last year.

The car was found abandoned two days later in Portland Road, near Seven Sisters Underground station.

Police said details were being revealed only after other efforts to trace the men had failed, adding that a £20,000 reward is being offered for help in catching the gang.

Officers said the woman went on to have her baby without any problems.

Detective Inspector Robert Pack, the investigating officer, said he hoped ‘allegiances had changed’ over the past 14 months as he appealed for information.

He said: ‘Every rape is a very serious crime but what makes this all the more shocking was that the victim was so clearly heavily pregnant.

‘It was all the more traumatic because it took place in the couple’s home.

‘Concerns for the unborn baby can only have exacerbated what was already an emotionally and physically traumatic experience.’

He added: ‘Allegiances may have changed over the last 14 months and we would urge anyone with information to contact us.

‘There is a reward on offer of up to £20,000 and I hope there are people out there who are prepared to do the right thing and tell us what they know.

‘Do you know the men who did this? Do you remember hearing anyone boasting about stealing an Audi TT around this time? We would like to hear from you.’

The couple are still haunted by the attack.

The female victim said: ‘Everything that you believe to be safe is no longer safe. You can’t walk into the bedroom and feel relaxed because you remember that someone was in there who wasn’t supposed to be there.’

The couple had been watching TV when they heard a noise outside at around 10.30pm. The boyfriend opened the front door to see what was going on.

He saw the three men, all wearing balaclavas and scarves, at the end of the path and tried to shut the front door but the men forced their way inside and shoved him to the ground.

The suspect who carried out the sexual assault is described as black, 6ft, aged 18 to 25 and stocky.

He wore a black balaclava, black jacket, black tracksuit bottoms and black shoes.

A second man was black or Asian, 5ft 6in and about 18.

The third suspect, who had the gun was black, 5ft 10in, and aged between 18 and 22. He was wearing burgundy tracksuit bottoms.

Police said they were keen to trace the men if only to eliminate them from their inquiries.

DI Pack said he believes the men who carried out the attack either live locally or have links to the area.

He added: ‘They clearly felt comfortable committing a crime at the top end of the scale which suggests they know the area.

‘We need people to give us names to open up other avenues of  investigation for this enquiry.

‘It is unlikely that these men will not have spoken to someone about the robbery or about the fact that they stole the car.’

A reconstruction of the incident will be shown on BBC1’s Crimewatch at 9pm tonight.

Routers are an ideal way of managing internet access and bandwidth in households with multiple computers. They also add an extra physical barrier to intrusion over the internet too.

The most popular home router is the Linksys WRT54GS. It has been on the market for a number of years and has improved steadily. The installed firmware is efficient and pretty robust making it an ideal starter router for the budding amateur. As well as the standard firmware, there are third party, Unix based firmware which add considerably to the features of this innocuous blue box.

The router will work straight out of the box with the default configuration but none of the security features work. It will be our job to enable them straight away in order to secure your home network as much as possible.

The installation order should be, internet to modem, modem to input socket of router via network cable. The computers then connect to the four network ports on the back. Configuration is pretty straightforward, via a web interface. Access it by putting http://192.168.1.1 into your browser. The default username and password is admin.

The first screen in the overview of the network settings. We don’t need to change anything here to get things moving, as long as there is an IP address found it’s all good. If you have a wireless connection, choose the wireless tab next. If you don’t, disable the wireless and skip the next section. Just remember when you make any changes on a particular page to save them before moving on. Each will need to be saved individually or the changes will be lost.

The wireless settings are pretty straightforward, change the Wireless Network Name or SSID to something you recognize. Then set the wireless channel, ensuring you also set any devices you want to connect to with the same channel. Next comes Wireless Security where we will lock down the network. Set the Security Mode to WPA2 if your devices support it and set the Encryption to 128 bit. You can either generate a passphrase, or provide your own. Whatever you do, remember it as you will also need to add this to the wireless devices you want to use the network.

The most important of these changes is to enable the firewall. Choose the Security, then the Firewall tab and enable all of the options. Next we change the default username and password. Select the Administration tab and set it to something complicated but memorable, then disable remote management.

By following these simple steps, a user of any skill level can quickly secure their network from attack. The router can do so much more, but you are now safe enough to explore all the options you have. Despite having a hardware firewall on the router, ensure that each device connecting to the network also has a software one too, you can’t be too careful!
